Common causes of foot pain

You could be experiencing foot pain for a number of reasons. A foot injury can result in pain ranging from mild to excruciating. Foot pain relief for these conditions does not have to be expensive surgery or medication. Physical therapy is a great place to start!

While some foot pain is caused by an acute injury, it can also develop gradually due to a chronic underlying condition.

Common causes of foot pain, according to the Mayo Clinic, include, but are not limited to, the following conditions:

Tarsal tunnel syndrome

This occurs when the tarsal tunnel (the nerve that runs from the ankle to the foot) becomes pinched and painfully inflamed. Symptoms include sharp, shooting pains, “pins and needles” sensations, and burning sensations in the feet.

Fortunately, physical therapy has been shown to help with the rehabilitation of injured feet as well as the relief of acute and chronic pain.

Sprains and strains

Strains and sprains are common injuries that are frequently confused with one another! Sprains occur when a ligament is stretched or torn, whereas strains occur when a muscle or tendon is stretched. A medical professional should evaluate both of these injuries to ensure that no long-term damage occurs.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a common inflammatory condition that causes joint pain in the feet. The most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Both types of arthritis can have serious consequences for the foot and ankle joints. Arthritis can strike people of any age.

Bursitis

Bursitis develops when tendons rub against anti-friction sacs called “bursae,” causing irritation and discomfort. This condition can also affect your elbow, shoulder, and hip, but it is most commonly associated with your foot and heel.

Fractures

A fracture happens when a bone is subjected to too much force or trauma, causing it to crack or break completely. A foot or ankle fracture may require weeks of rest to heal properly.

Collapsed arches

Several tendons working together form the arch of your foot. Your foot will form a proper arch when the tendons pull together properly. If the tendons do not pull together properly, your foot will form a very small arch or no arch at all. This is known as a “fallen arch” or “flat foot,” and it can cause long-term pain or discomfort.

Plantar fasciitis

Inflammation of the connective tissue on the bottom of the foot can cause plantar fasciitis. This could be due to aggravated usage, such as prolonged standing, poor posture, or inadequate arch support in footwear.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis, a condition in which the tendons become inflamed over time, can result from overuse of the tendons. With tendinitis, even simple tasks like walking to the end of the driveway to check the mail can be difficult. Over time, this condition can become chronic and excruciatingly painful, exacerbating the situation.
